Bitter orange

The bitter orange tree is a citric tree from the rutaceae family. A lot of varieties of bitter orange are used because of its essential oil, to make perfume and flavoring, or medicine. We extract the essential oil from the peel of the fruits. From its flowers, by distillation, we get the orange blossom water. We use the peel dried and fresh.

The components of its flowers are essential oil: limonene, linalool and lenol; in the pericarp there are flavonoids responsible of the bitter taste and non-bitter too, essential oi, mineral salts, abundant pectin and citric, malic and ascorbic acids. In its leaves we find essential oil, terpene carbohydrates, alcohols, flavonoids and limonene.
